The Latest News on the World's Sight of the Total Lunar Eclipse

If you’re wondering where the best place to see the world’s sight of the total lunar eclipse is, the short answer is that it doesn’t matter too much.

The Moon will be visible from anywhere in North and South America, Europe, Africa, and parts of West Asia and East Asia on November 8th-9th during the hours of darkness (for those in North America). This celestial event will also be streamed online for viewers who can’t make it out to see it live—click here to watch it with Slooh.

When is the next total lunar eclipse?

In order to get your questions answered about the world's latest news on the total lunar eclipse, you might want to click here. This is a video that is a thirty-five minute countdown. It starts at zero and counts up from one hour before, then stops so you can see what is happening during that time frame.

Where in the world will it be visible?

A total lunar eclipse will occur on November 8th, 2016. This is not the first time that this phenomenon has occurred, but it is a rare event.

The last time a total lunar eclipse took place was 1982, and the next one will not happen until 2033! A lunar eclipse happens when Earth moves between the Sun and Moon, casting a shadow onto our satellite. If you live in North America or Asia/Oceania, this is your chance to see it!

How long will it last?

In case you missed it, a total lunar eclipse took place last night. To put it into perspective, this phenomenon only happens about twice a year. In order to understand what a total lunar eclipse is, it is important to know that the Earth has two types of light: direct and indirect.

This event is called an eclipse because when the Earth blocks out direct sunlight from striking the moon (as seen in Figure 1), then indirect sunlight can reach and illuminate part or all of its surface; this gives off a red-colored glow. When this occurs at a full moon, it creates a spectacular effect we call the blood moon.

A total lunar eclipse will last for more than three hours

What causes a total lunar eclipse?

Total lunar eclipses occur when a full moon passes through Earth's shadow, blocking out all of the sun's light. This can happen two ways: when the full moon enters Earth’s shadow in its entirety and when it crosses only part way into our planet’s shadow. The November 8 eclipse is a partial eclipse, which means that only a small portion of Earth’s shadow will fall upon it.

What are some interesting facts about total lunar eclipses?

Total lunar eclipses happen when Earth is in between the sun and moon. During a total lunar eclipse, Earth blocks any direct sunlight from reaching the moon, which causes it to turn a dark shade of red and have an appearance similar to that of a strawberry. The last time this happened was in July 2018, but there will be another one happening on November 8th.
